O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The singer made it through to the top 100 rounds after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil received high praise by the judges but suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she never placed in the third place ever again. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil and Rex Goudie made it to the final two, the judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
