O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. She made it into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performance. O'Neil had received high praise from jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, and then second place. Judges were amazed at her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the bottom three once in the future. The performance she gave on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
