O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performances. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. The judges were shocked by this and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. Following two stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two competitors, the judge Werner said that newspaper headlines would read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
